Mrs. Calhoun has been practicing civil, domestic and criminal litigation since beginning her
career in the legal field in 1989. Mrs. Calhoun graduated from the University of Southern
Mississippi with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Paralegal Studies with a minor in Spanish. While
earning her four year degree, Mrs. Calhoun worked in a law firm and she continued that career
path, working with large law firms in Charlotte, Hickory and Gastonia. She worked as a civil
litigation paralegal, certified by the North Carolina State Bar, preparing cases for trial and
assisting attorneys in the courtroom.
For many years Mrs. Calhoun worked with personal injury and domestic clients exclusively. The
work was difficult but very rewarding, and she found her passion in helping others through
some of the most trying times of their lives. During her nearly twenty-five years of working as a
paralegal, she gained experience in business, contracts, criminal defense, wills, estates, divorce,
custody, and other family law areas. She was the senior litigation paralegal for a law firm in
Charlotte when she decided the time had come for her to pursue the next step in her career and
attend law school.
She earned her Juris Doctor degree from Charlotte School of Law, graduating with honors.
During her years there she worked as a Senior Editor for the Charlotte Law Review, in which one
of her articles is published. She was Torts Teaching Assistant, instructing students about civil
claims such as personal injury, contractual claims, and other civil injuries. She volunteered at
the Mississippi Center for Justice, working to help victims of Hurricane Katrina and the
housing crisis that resulted from it. She also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, the
Innocence Project, and Charlotte School of Law's Mentor Program. She is affiliated with
many associations, and received a number of honors and awards which are listed below.
She most recently received the Top 100 Notable Award and the Top 25 Female Attorneys
Award.
Mrs. Calhoun enjoys assisting those in the community and others who have a need for legal
representation, primarily in Lincoln County. She enjoys spending time away from work with
her dogs, Motown and Archie. She is a "Lifetime Member" of the World Wide Association of Notable Alumni and an active board member of the Lincoln County Arts Council.
